The move is in response to human rights abuses.
In response to human rights abuses committed as the country of Ethiopia endures a civil war, the United States has imposed sanctions against six individuals and organizations within the country. The Department of State has made it clear that they are not imposing sanctions against the government of Ethiopia or the opposing party yet, but will consider it if human rights violations continue.
“These measures are not directed at the people of Eritrea, Ethiopia, or the greater Horn of Africa Region; they are calibrated to impose costs on those prolonging the crisis,“ Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. “The U.S. Department of the Treasury has taken a series of steps to permit the continued flow of food, medicine, and humanitarian support to Eritrea.”
